Underground Profiles: My Familiar
The art of composition builds complexities into the complexities of My Familiar, a six piece folk band inclusive of strings and harmonies. My Familiar consists of vocalist Lydia Joy, cellist Alyssa Almeida, bassist Luke Benedict, and bassist Brian Clarke. They’re a new band making music exclusively under the mindset of guitarist and vocalist, Damien James.
James formed My Familiar after piecing together a brilliantly composed solo album, “Paper Cut World.” Through an extensive formal musical education and a focus on theater, the band coalesces into a dynamic, heartfelt sound led by the front harmonies of James and Joy layered atop the mood driving cello.
In their Original Slacker Podcast interview, the band discusses the challenges of coordinating and building a sound based almost exclusively on James’s lead. While recording, the band played three tracks including: Demons, Devil Horns and Halos, and Close to the Light!
